    Pack 2007-08 meetings/activities



    *APRIL 21: The Moulton City Police met with the Wolves at the church parking lot on April 21 and discussed bicycle safety with the scouts.
    Wolves leader Elli Armstrong and some parents also listened in on the safety tips. The meeting allowed the Wolf scouts to fullfill a requirement in becoming a Bear Scout next year.

    *MARCH 31: While the general pack meeting was canceled because of state testing at the schools during the week, the Wolves met at the Lawrence County EMA office at 6:30 p.m. About six scouts and their parents and siblings toured the facility for about one hour. The scouts viewed the agency's generator and talked with the dispatcher. More photos to come.

    *MARCH 17: Despite a small crowd, the scouts had plenty of lessons. Under the direction of Angie Smith, the Tigers learned about family celebrations. With Elli Armstrong leading, the Wolves learned about fire safety around the house and made plans to visit the Lawrence County Emergency Management Agency office later this month. With David Smith directing, the Webelos scouts learned about proper care around a camp fire.

    *MARCH 8: PINEWOOD DERBY Scouts, family members and friends totaling about 75 braved the cold and frosty weather to witness the annual running of the Pack 222 Pinewood Derby. Webelos I scout Mike Wetzel led the group in saying the Pledge of Allegiance and David Smith gave the invocation.
    Two district scout representatives were on hand to talk with the crowd. David and Angie Smith were presented a plaque for their 5 years as Cubmasters. Then David went over the ground rules on the double-elimination races.
    Working the race operations were Michael Wetzel, David Smith and Angie Smith. Boy Scout Hunter Smith also worked the finish line.
    Before long, the 28 cars were taking their nervous turns on the starting block.
    Between races, there was plenty of food, snacks and drinks available for the audience and hungry racers.
    There were plenty of close races.
    Three cars were entered for their good looks only.

    *MARCH 3: About 20 scouts took advantage of practice runs for their cars. Some scouts ran a couple of quick times and headed for home. Others fine-tuned some wheels and weights and ran several trips down the 16-foot track. The flashy speed and creative designs were evident at the trials. The big race is Saturday, March 8. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

    *FEB. 4: It was back to working on achievement badges for the Tigers, Wolves and Webelos. The Bears are up-to-date and staying home working on Pinewood Derby entries.
    Under the guidance of Angie Smith, the Tigers used secret codes to send and read messages. With Elli Armstrong leading the way, the Wolves made toolboxes. The kits were a few extra from Webelos parent Rick England, the Wolves and their parents got a grip on the tools and stayed busy the entire night.
    The Webelos worked on achievements with the scout logo and its symbolism.

    *JAN. 28: Pinewood Derby was the topic of the night. Cubmaster David Smith held a Pinewood Derby workshop for the interested parents while the scouts broke into two groups. One group featuring the Wolves learned about some tools. The other group featuring Webelos and some Bears built wooden tool boxes. The father of Webelos scout James England had the tool box kits pre-cut and holes drilled awaiting screws put in place by the scouts. Mr. England said some of the wood came from a poplar tree on his property and that Lowe's and Littrell Lumber helped donate supplies.

    *JAN. 14: Coming back from a long Christmas break, the pack got back to business working on achievement awards. No meeting was held Jan. 21 because of the MLK holiday.

    2008
    *DEC. 17 CHRISTMAS PARTY: After a busy two weeks with meetings and the Christmas parade, the pack enjoyed a Christmas party with more than 100 people in attendance at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church gym.
    The scouts played games before and after a dinner and awards ceremony. Plenty of photos were made of the food, fun and fellowship. Here are some of the images. All scouts groups were given their achievement badges. Here the Wolves and Webelos receive some pins and patches for their hard work during the first half of the school year.

    *DEC. 7 PARADE: Scouts of Pack 222 packed a float for the parade. The scouts and paradegoers enjoyed much warmer weather than in the past three years.

    *DEC. 3 MEETING: After the pledge and prayer, the drawing for the door prize went to Webelos scout Mike Wetzel. He said he would give the door prize to the 10-year-old boy who Pack 222 is sponsoring for Christmas.
    Parents signed up to bring food, sweets, cups, drinks or plates to the Dec. 17 Christmas Party at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. The party will begin at 6 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than the usual meeting time.
    Details of the Pack 222 hay trailer ride in the Dec. 7 Moulton Christmas Parade were discussed.
    In group meetings, it was a busy night.
    Parents filled out their scouts' achievement forms. The Tigers made placemats for a senior citizen center.
    The Wolves decorated Christmas cards for the seniors.
    The Bears used the gym in physical fitness and a balloon popping contest.
    The Webelos saw several optical illusions and how they work.

    *NOV. 26 MEETING: A large group of scouts showed up with the Wolves participating in an JROTC program at the Alexander Coliesium im Moulton. Chief Warrant Officer Baker led a group showing the scouts flag-folding, flag-raising, saluting the flag with hands, sabers and weapons. The Wolves learned how to properly display the flag, too.

    After the pledge, Austin Shelton won the door prize, a derby ruler designed to help measure the height and weight of pinewood derby cars.
    David and Angie Smith told the scouts that plans are being made for the Moulton Christmas parade Friday Dec. 7. Scouts will have a hay trailer in the parade and will be able to toss candy to spectators.
    After the discussion, groups divided into their respective dens. The Tigers, Bears and Webelos worked on their achievement badges. The Webelos learned about internia, wind flow and low pressure actions.
    *NOV. 19 MEETING: Scouts broke into their groups after discussions of the successful popcorn/magazine fundraising.

    *OCT. 29 MEETING: The 24 scouts and parents discussed Cub Haunted after the pledge. Also the final popcorn sales monies were collected. The pack divided into groups with Tigers drawing leaves.
    The Wolves read family materials together.
    The Bears worked on their achievement badges.
    The Webelos learned to whistle using an empty acorn shell.

    *CAMP COMER, OCT. 27-28: About 20 scouts and their families attended Cub Haunted at Camp Comer near Mentone in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Despite cold temperatures, the scouts found plenty of things to do including driving race cars and building campfires. When the cold got too rough, the boys headed indoors for something warm to drink. David and Angie Smith and family had a family portrait made while they were in the mountains. Tents were plentiful throughout the weekend.

    *OCT. 22 MEETING: David and Angie Smith informed the scouts and their families about the Camp Comer-Cub Haunted Weekend, which is sold out. The scout families will be leaving the Foodland parking lot on Hwy. 157 in Moulton at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 and should arrive in Mentone shortly before 4 p.m. Angie told the parents to pack light since cars will not be allowd in the camping area. The attendees will be shuttled from the parking lot to the campground via tractors pulling flat bed trailers. She advised parents to purchase glow sticks in advance and for all scouts to wear their Pack 222 shirts.
    A notice was given that popcorn sales would end Oct. 29. All scouts are urged to have their popcorn/magazine orders at the next meeting.
    The scouts then divided into groups. The first-year Tigers worked on the Cub Scout promise.
    The Wolves learned proper phone etiquette and work on pledges.
    Webelos learned how to tell the age of a tree without cutting it down.


    *OCT. 1 MEETING: Angie Smith talked the scout parents about the popcorn and magazine sales, which fund many of the Pack 222 activities. A couple of scout leaders were missing due to illness. David Smith lead an outdoor exercise program with the scouts which included about 30 minutes at the playground. A new monthly calendar was distrbuted and will be posted within days on the Web site. More details on Cub Haunted were discussed.

    *SEPT. 24 MEETING: It was a busy night for the scouts. Soccer action has started and some scouts play games on Monday evenings and can't make the pack meeting. More plans were discussed about the pack attending Session 6 of Cub Haunted the weekend of Oct. 27-28.
    The pack welcomed new scouts from the Danville area.
    The Tiger scouts visited the Moulton Police Station.
    The Wolves, Bears and Webelos all worked on Bobcat requirements and achievement badges. The meeting was dismissed at 7:30 p.m.


    *SEPT. 17 MEETING: About 25 scouts and their families attended the meeting. Angie Smith gave details of the upcoming Cub Haunted on Oct. 27-28.
    The scouts then divided into their respective dens.
    The Tiger Cubs and their parents worked on the Bobcat merit badges and made plans to visit the Moulton police station next week.
    Elli Armstrong directed the wolves den which studied state history.
    Brent Steadman instructed the Bears on personal safety.
    Webelos I and II drew outlines of their homes and worked on engineering badges.


    *DISTRICT CAMPOUT/FISHING RODEO: On Sept. 14 and 15, about eight Pack 222 scouts and their families took part in the Arrowhead District campout and fishing rodeo at the Joe Wheeler State Park.
    Congratulations to Pack 222 Tiger Cub B.J. Freeman, who won third place in the fishing rodeo! B.J. and family hauled in five bream and one bass for the honor.


    *SEPT. 10 MEETING: After the pledge was led by members of the Boy Scout Troop 202, Packmaster David Smith encouraged parents and scouts to participate in the weekend's campout at Joe Wheeler State Park. About 35 scouts plus their parents were in attendance.
    The scouts then assembled into their dens for their weekly meetings.
    The Tigers under the direction of Angie Smith worked on their photo scrapbooks with a helping hand from their parents.
    Wolves leader Elli Armstrong took her group to the gym where they worked on tumbling and agility drills.
    Bears leaders Brent Steadman led his group of through book activities. The small group took timeout for a quick photo.
    David Smith's webelos group learned about triangular supports and electrical current. The group made a magnet, discussed Morse Code and worked on a building a bridge.

    *AUG. 27 MEETING: Books were distributed and t-shirts were ordered for more than 35 scouts and parents attending.

    *INTRODUCTORY MEETING, AUGUST 20: The Pleasant Grove Baptist Church gymnasium saw 38 scouts and their families attend the first meeting of the year. Packmasters David and Angie Smith took orders for Pack 222 shirts and gave a brief outline of the year's planned activities.



    Pack 2006-07 meetings/activities


    *END OF YEAR AWARDS BANQUET, MAY 20: The Pleasant Grove Baptist Church gymnasium looked more like Hawaii at the end of the year banquet. Plenty of leis, flowered shirts and food, yes, food made the Hawaiian party complete.
    About 30 scouts and their family members accounted for the group of about 75 enjoying the awards banquet.
    After the Pledge of Allegiance, Pack leader David Smith told crowd of the history of scouting while Angie Smith put symbolic paint stripes on the respective scouts' faces.
    The Tigers went first. Then the Wolves. The Bears were next and then the Weblos I. A trio of Weblos II attended their last Pack 222 meeting since they now must study and prepare for the Boy Scouts next fall.
    The scouts were given their acheivement badges earned for the second half of the year. You can bet plenty of photos were snapped. Some scouts even shared seats.
    At the end of the hourlong awards programs, a few adult leaders were recognized before the food lines were open. After food and fellowship, the Pack 222 scouts and their families said goodbye to a productive 2006-2007 school year.

    *ZOO SNOOZE, APRIL 28: About 50 scouts and family members made the overnight trip to the Birmingham Zoo an entertaining time to remember. The popular Zoo Snooze at the Birmingham Zoo was a big hit. More details and photos to follow.


    *PACK MEETING MARCH 26: Calendars for April and May were distributed to the scouts and parents.
    Under the tutelage of Hollis Armstrong, the Tigers learned trivia board games.
    Meanwhile, David Smith taught the Bears and Webelos about secret code languages. Each scout then spelled his name using the special code.

    *PACK MEETING MARCH 19: Another small group of 10 scouts enjoyed the late sunshine and nice weather.
    The Tigers enjoyed a game of soccer under the guidance of Hollis Armstrong. The Webelos and Bears got to turn a wrench or two on a bicycle repair course offered by pack master David Smith.

    *Trenton finishes sixth in district: Pack 222 Pinewood Derby King for 2007 Trenton Smith took his speed racer to the District Pinewood Derby at the Colonial Mall in Decatur on Saturday, March 10 and brought home a sixth-place finish out of a field of 74 cars. That's splendid, Trenton!
    Hunter Smith, Noah Armstrong, Sam Armstrong and Tyler Ballinger competed in the racing event all finishing in the top 25. Blake Bohannon wowed the mall patrons with his Dale Earnhardt pinewood replica.     David and Angie Smith also represented Pack 222 as busy volunteers during the five-hour event. Pack 236 conducted the races. Congrats to all!
    Here are the official final results.

    *FEBRUARY 26 MEETING: A small group of scouts showed up with a lot of enthusiasm, two days after the annual Pinewood Derby on Feb. 24. David Smith thanked the scouts for being on their best scout behavior during the derby festivities and showed a copy of The Decatur Daily's Sunday edition which published two photos from the derby.
    The Webelos, Bears and Wolves participated in fitness and basketball drills. Meanwhile the Tigers were learning the different food groups and coloring examples of each.


    * PINEWOOD DERBY, FEBRUARY 24: About 100 people attended the pack's annual running of the Pinewood Derby at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church's gym. Angie Smith made sure the racing theme was prevalent with checkered flag banners, table clothes and streamers throughout the race hall.
    After registration and inspection completed at 10:45 a.m., David and Angie Smith went over the derby rules and double-elimination process. Judges came in to look over the show cars. Then the Tiger cars hit the track first, then the Wolves, followed by the Bears, Webelos I and Webelos II cars.
    And it wouldn't be a race without some good food for the spectators.
    There plenty of anxious moments where some scouts could not bear to watch their car race. David and Angie Smith and Hollis Armstrong made sure the racing was fair and cars properly lined at the starting gate. After nearly 2.5 hours of nonstop racing, the scouts gathered at victory lane to receive some hardware for eager to receive some hardware for their success at the track.
    Reaping the most and largest trophies was Trenton Smith with the fastest car. He got a hardy hug and kiss from dad David.
    Here are the top 5.
    Here's Trenton and Blake Bohannon, the winner of the best of show award with his miniature Dale Earnhardt car. It was Blake's second straight year to win the award. Last year, he won with a replica of the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard.

    And Trenton Smith capped off the day with receiving the prestigious Cub Scout Spirit Award for his work and enthusiasm at the derby. What a day for Trenton! Congratulations!
    Even future scouts reaped trophies for their work at the derby.

    *FEBRUARY 19 MEETING: In one of the most important meetings of the year, parents and scouts got to see their wooden creations make maiden treks down the Pinewood Derby track. But before the trials were run. Cars had to be weighed and specific details discussed among the track officials.

    *FEBRUARY 12 MEETING: Parents and scouts signed up to bring food and drinks to the Feb. 24 Pinewood Derby and the scouts worked on their achievements.

    *JAN. 29 MEETING: Parents and scouts heard changes in the February schedule including moving the Pinewood Derby up a couple of weeks.
    More rules for the district pinewood derby were distributed to the scouts.
    The scouts divided into their respective groups. The Bears worked on knot-tying techniques by leader Michael Gibson. Then the scouts took their turn in knot-tying.
    The Wolves learned about the importance of a buddy system.
    The Tigers learned about different currencies across the globe.

    *JAN. 22 MEETING: Parents heard David Smith and Hollis Armstrong discuss tips for building pinewood derby cars.
    The Tiger scouts were busy making Valentine cards for senior citizens.
    The Wolves and Bears did exercises out of their handbooks.

    *JAN. 8 MEETING: After the pledge of allegience and prayer, scouts broke into group meetings.
    The Webelos scouts learned a few life-saving techniques. A CPR demonstration was given.
    The Bears worked on several games badges in the gym arena of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
    The Wolves discussed several topics including personal safety.
    The Tigers worked on game while leader Hollis Armstrong discussed Pinewood Derby car making techniques with parents.


    *ICE SKATING PARTY AT POINT MALLARD: THURSDAY, JAN. 4. About a dozen scouts and their families didn't let the rainy outdoors spoil their fun indoors at the Point Mallard Ice Rink. After strapping on the skates, Angie Smith and other parents helped some scouts find their rhythm on the ice. Some scouts got help with training bars. You can bet there were plenty of spins and spills. And if Pack 222 is in the vicinity, snacks and drinks aren't far away. Heck, the fireplace in the warm party room was a popular gathering spot, too. A giant cookie, ice cream and drinks were plenty for the hungry partygoers.

    *CHRISTMAS PARTY AND AWARDS BANQUET: Monday, Dec. 18. More than 40 scouts and their families attended the annual Christmas Party. Chicken fingers and cookies were the popular dishes served during the evening. Also, scouts were given their awards and badges earned since September.
    Three special scouts were honored for their strong popcorn sales. Ethan Thrasher won a specatular stereo system with a five-CD changer for being the top salesman. Hunter Stewart received a remote control ATV for his second place in sales and Tyler Crowden was recognized as the third-place salesman. All three scouts were applauded for their hard work. Congrats again, fellows!
    Perhaps the highlight of the festival was Cubmaster David Smith showing a bit of his magic, which enthralled the scouts.
    A few folks had Christmas photos made.
    Blocks of wood, wheels and nails were distributed to the scouts. The items will be transformed into speeding pinewood derby cars ready to race in mid-February.

    *DEC. 11 MEETING: Scouts worked on their achievement badges. The Tigers had an entertaining time, decorating Christmas cookies.


    *DEC. 4 MEETING: Scouts and parents discussed the upcoming Christmas party and awards banquet. Parents signed up to bring food. Popcorn sales results were discussed. Scouts then worked on achievement badges. The Tigers discussed personal safety. The Wolves and parents discussed fire safety. The Bears did physical fitness drills. The Webelos worked on their Ready Man badges. Monday, Dec. 4 at 6:30 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wren.

    *MOULTON CHRISTMAS PARADE: Friday, Dec. 1. Thirty six Pack 222's scouts braved the cold and joined the parade riding on a trailer along the route. Packmaster David Smith appeared to enjoy the parade as much as the scouts and parents.

    *NOV. 6 MEETING: A good crowd of scouts and parents braved a rainy Monday evening at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church to discuss plans for the next two months. After talks about the popcorn sale and Christmas parade and party, the scouts broke into their den sessions. The Tigers heard leader Hollis Armstrong talk about travel directions. The Wolves were led by Brent Steadman. The Bears scouts were fingerprinted and then the adults were fingerprinted. The Webelos learned how to tell the age of a tree by the rings inside.

    *CUB HAUNTED: Saturday, Oct. 21. The group going to Camp Comer met at the the Foodland/Dollar General parking lot on Alabama 157 at 12:30 p.m. to caravan to Camp Comer. Packmaster David Smith informed the drivers of the trip's details before leaving for the Northeast Alabama locale.

    *OCT. 16 MEETING: Plans for the Camp Comer trip were finalized and the new order of Pack 222 shirts were distributed. Scouts broke into groups with the Tigers making frames. The Wolves learning about the flag. The Bears getting a refresher course in spanish and the Webelos working on badge projects.

    *OCT. 2 MEETING: A recap of the successful third annual family campout at the Oakville Indian Mounds and busy plans for October were discussed. Also, the scouts participated in a shoe relay before heading to their respective classes.

    *3RD ANNUAL PACK 222 FAMILY CAMPOUT: Sept. 29-30 Friday night and Saturday morning at the Oakville
    Indian Mounds was a big success.
    More than 100 scouts and their family members all pitched in to kick off the new scouting year. Even big sisters and little sisters got to join in the fun. There were plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy. Late in the afternoon the tents were erected and dinner started. After dinner, the fire was a popular gathering spot and those tasty smores were roasted. Fellowship and stories were shared before it was time to hit the hay. Saturday morning came too early for some, but pancakes and sausages for breakfast got the day started off right. It didn't take long for fishing rods to appear. A couple of fish were even pulled from the beautiful lake at the Indian Mounds. Tiger scout Sam Armstrong showed the group where he got his big one that didn't get away.
    After scouts attended a canoe safety class, they waited patiently in line and were eager to try their hand at paddling and paddling.
    Jeremy and Daniel Wallace discovered they could float as a father-son team.
    Some canoeists floated like experts. Some found canoeing a family activity.
    Some canoeists even found time to smile for the cameras.
    A group of scouts even went on a three-mile hike through the park. By midmorning, the tents were disassembled, packed up and folks headed home.

    *SEPT. 25 MEETING: The third annual family campout at the Oakville Indian Mounds was the topic of the evening for the parents after the scouts worked in their respective groups. The Webelos learned how to make an electrical circuit. The Bears read about what makes the United States great. The Wolves did book work and the Tigers learned about what it means to be a Cub Scout.

    *SEPT. 18 MEETING: Each scout group worked on projects. The Tigers played a balloon elimination game; the Wolves and Bears did work in their respective books and Webelos had a lesson on physics.
    Also forms on the popcorn sales were distributed. Deadline of the sale is Oct. 23.

    *FIRST MEETING OF 2006-07 YEAR: On Sept. 11, David and Angie Smith, pack leaders, talked with the scouts and parents about the pack's activities, uniforms and operations for the coming year. The scouts met with their respective leaders before enjoying some kickball while the parents' meeting continued. The group leaders for 2006-07 are: from left, Hollis Armstrong, Tigers; David Smith, Webelos; Brandon Gibson, Bears; Brent Steadman, Wolves.

    2005-06 pack meetings/activities

    *June 10 Arena football outing!: A group of Pack 222 scouts and family members totaling 48 people were recognized on the message board at the Tennessee Valley Vipers indoor football game at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville on June 10. Each scout and young family member received a free Viper jersey and caps. Even though the Vipers lost, packmaster David Smith said everyone had a great time. Photos by Denise Wallace.

    *April 28-29 awards/campout: The pack celebrated another successful year with a campout and awards ceremony at the Lawrence County Indian Mounds. About 50 scouts and their family members attended. Hotdogs and snacks were served the night of April 28 and awards were distributed about 8:30 the morning of April 29. Check here for more details and photos of the campout.

    *April 3 pack meeting: The pack had its final regular meeting at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church's gymnasium in Wren.
    Scout master David Smith told the scouts and parents there would be an awards/campout combination at the Lawrence County Indian Mounds campground in April or May. Details were not final at the meeting.

    *March 27 pack meeting: The pack discussed the upcoming banquet and possible campout at the Indian Mounds in the Speake community. Afterwards, the wolves visited the Moulton Fire Department.
    *Fundraiser: Pack 222 offered hot dogs and Pepsi products for donations at the Moulton Wal-Mart on March 18.
    A big group of scouts and parents worked the fundraiser in shifts.
    Doing plenty of the cooking in the morning hours was Steve Williams and David Smith, and in the afternoon Hollis Armstrong and Keith Lee and Michael Wetzel did their fair share of cooking the dogs.
    The donation monies will help fund the pack's general fund and upcoming campout and banquet.

    *March 13 pack meeting: Bad weather kept the numbers low. David Smith talked to the scouts and parents about the March 18 fundraiser at Walmart to help the pack replenish some funds for its activities. Afterwards, the pack broke into troops for nightly activities. The Wolves learned to tie a Windsor knot tie. Here Eli Couch smiles after the night's tries.

    *Pack Pinewood Derby races March 4:
    Nearly 30 cars got their spin on the track assembled by David Smith and a shot at winning nice trophies. When it was over, Trevor Lee and Blake Bohanon had the top two awards. Trevor Lee went undefeated on the day winning the Webelos II division before taking out 14 other cars in the playoffs. Blake Bohanon's replica of the General Lee got the judges' nod for Best of Show. Lee and Bohanon saw their photo in the following day's (Sunday, March 5) Decatur Daily. The three fastest cars belonged to Lee, right, Noah Armstrong, second, center; and Stephen Williams, third, left.
    Trevor's car finished sixth overall among 47 at the district competition in Decatur on March 11. Congratulations Trevor!!
    In a tough job for the judges, best of show awards went to Bohanon, first, Lee, second, for an 8-wheeled tank; and Wolf scout Daniel Pitts for his blue racer with air spoiler on back.

    At the district meet's best of show, Trevor's tank finished fourth, and Bohanon's General Lee garnered fifth place. Congralulations guys!!
    Daniel Pitts' parents made some last-minute adjustments to bring the wheels in compliance with race rules.
    Busy working the check-in desk were Angie Smith, David Smith and Steve Williams.
    Minutes before race time, pack leader David Smith informed the large crowd about race regulations and format of the double-elimination competition.

    The division winners were:
    Webelos II: Noah Armstrong, third; Buddy Mann, second; Trevor Lee, first.
    Webelos I: Stephen Williams, first; Trenton Smith, second; Hunter Smith, third.
    Bears: Jonah Armstrong, first; Josh Williams, second; Brandon Landreth, third.
    Wolves: Mike Wetzel, first; James England, second; Walker Gibson, third.
    Tigers: Ryan Takko, first; Tristan Blaxton, second; Dakota Steadman, third.
    Other received participation awards.
    Wolf scout Thomas Gibson won a tall trophy for his scout spirit at the race.

    *Feb. 27 meeting: Scouts and parents heard last-minute instructions about the pinewood derby.
    A signup sheet for food was passed among the adults before the scouts broke into their respective ranks for activities.
    David Smith, packmaster, encouraged all scouts to be working on their book achievements. A banquet is tentatively planned for the end of April.

    *Feb. 23 Pinewood derby practice: About 20 scouts tested their Pinewood derby
    wheels, weight and dimensions at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church gymnasium. Scout leaders and parents took turns as starters as the scouts watched their
    cars zoom down the track. A few visitors at the practice session were the Mike Murphy family of Hartselle. Murphy brought his 39-year-old Pinewood Derby car he built with the help of a friend (Mark Wagner) in Tampa, Fla., in 1967. Murphy's dad was serving in Vietnam at the time of the race. The car featured the wood block with cockpit trimmed out and the taller wheels and wooden axle casings, common on the Pinewood Derby cars in the 1960s.
    *Feb. 6 meeting: Pack leaders David and Angie Smith distributed February and March calendars and encouraged scouts to continue to work on their Pinewood Derby cars and book achievements. The groups divided into dens with the Bears making tool boxes.
    *Jan. 30 meeting: Mark Wakefield, chaplain for the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, spoke to scouts and parents about deterring crime. After the informative 60-minute program, Officer Wakefield gave the scouts ID kits, gun locks and junior deputy badges. Steve Williams served as the packmaster for the night.
    *Jan. 23 meeting: Parents and scouts learned a few tricks of the trade when it came to building Pinewood Derby cars. Providing those tips were packmaster David Smith and Hollis Armstrong. The informative meeting lasted 90 minutes. During this time several scouts participated in den activities and played in the gym.
    There was no meeting Jan. 16 in observance of the ML King Jr. holiday.
    *Jan. 9 meeting: Scouts worked in their dens. The Wolves were busy making birdhouses with the help of Brandon Gibson and Mike Gibson and other adults.
    *Pack 222 Christmas Party: Monday, December 12, 6:30 p.m., at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church's gymnasium in Wren. There was plenty of food, games and fun at the Christmas Party. A few scouts were given awards for their achievements. Tiger scout Kaleb Steadman was recognized for being the pack's top popcorn seller. Way to go, Kaleb!

    *Dec. 5 meeting: Scouts worked in their dens. The Tigers traced leaves. The Wolves learned of the food pyramid. The Bears made magnets. Webelos I made a miniature catapult. Webelos II made wood frames. Also discussions were held on the upcoming Christmas party, Dec. 12.

    *Moulton Christmas Parade: Friday, Dec. 2, About 30 scouts and adults rode in the parade in chilly but weather not too cold. Plenty of candy was launched from the hay bale-ladened trailer driven by Eli Couch's dad. The excited scouts will remember it for a long time.

    *Nov. 28 pack meeting: Scoutmaster David Smith informed the scouts the pack would participate in the Dec. 2 Moulton Christmas Parade. Also a pack Christmas party was set for Dec. 12. The party will be at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

    *Nov. 21 pack meeting: Scouts participated in den activities including rope tying, making bird houses and Spanish classes.

    *Nov. 14 pack meeting: Plenty of scouts and parents braved bad weather as the first awards night of the school year saw each scout honored for their achievements. Refreshments were served.

    *Nov. 7 pack meeting: About 25 scouts attended a German language and culture class conducted by Elle Armstrong, a native of Germany. She taught a few German phrases, showed photos of her homeland and distributed some German sweets.
    The new class of Tiger scouts posed for photos for parents and the Web site. They are, Austin Chabaud, Ryan Talcko, Kaleb Steadman, Weston Blankenship, Isaac Witt, Preston Bassham, leader Jeff Witt, Dakota Steadman and M.J. Franklin.
    Also at the pack meeting, scoutmaster David Smith and some parents went over the scout books and required activities by the scouts.

    *Oct. 3 pack meeting: About 30 scouts at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Pack leader David Smith told the scouts and parents about the final plans of going to Camp Comer on Oct. 15-16. Scouts divided into their respective divisions for workshops.

    *Sept. 26 pack pack meeting: About 25 scouts met at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church's gym at 7 p.m. and after a few short announcements, separated into their respective divisions for classes.
    Pack 222 was honored to have Arrowhead Senior District Executive Paul Tatum visit the pack. Tatum and pack leader David Smith conducted pack business and paperwork.

    *First meeting of 2005-06 school year: Pack 222 met Monday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church's gymnasium in Wren.
    More than 30 scouts and their parents attended the first meeting, which was led by David Smith. Scouts met their new group leaders and heard about the Oct. 15 Scout Jubilee at Camp Comer. More details will be listed here the last week of September. New pack members and their parents are encouraged to visit this site often for updates.     Pack events 2004-2005

    *USATT.org Photo of the Week: The USA Table Tennis Web Site has selected a photo of Pack 222's Mike Wetzel's Pinewood Derby car as its photo of the week for the week of June 13, 2005. The honored image features Mike's car which depicted a table tennis table. Pack 222's Hollis Armstrong is featured as the official starter. Congratulations Mike and Hollis!

    *Summer campout: In June, a group of scouts went to Tennessee then to Lake Guntersville State Park for a two-night campout. The scout families had plenty to do -- swimming cooking out, horseshoes and hiking. Rain hit hard the second night, but didn't curtail the fun. Here Tiger scouts Mike Wetzel and Eathan Carter show off Mike's canvas tent once used by his granddad, Frank Wetzel of Dothan.

    *Awards banquet: Pack leader David Smith emceed a 90-minute patriotic-themed awards banquet and dinner Sunday, May 15,
    which saw more than 50 scouts and adults attend at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wren.
    After the pledge of allegiance and prayer, the Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos 1, and finally Webelos 2 received their awards garnered during a year of hard work and fun. Each of the scouts received patches and pins earned the second half of the year.
    The scouts each mentioned their highlight
    activities for the year, responses ranged from the first campout in September
    at the Indian Mounds in Oakville to the final outing of the Zoo Snooze in Birmingham.
    Leaders David and Angie Smith were presented a plaque from the Wetzel family for "exceptional leadership" during a busy 2004-2005 year.
    Following the awards ceremony, the group, enjoyed plenty of food and drinks.
    The scouts played foosball, table tennis and air hockey after dinner.
    Some of the adults viewed photographs of the year's events.
    *Fundraiser and Zoo Snooze trip: Pack 222 offered hot dogs and Pepsis for donations at the new Moulton Wal-Mart on April 2.
    The donation monies helped fund the pack's costs at the Birmingham Zoo Snooze.
    Sixteen scouts and 14 parents met at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and then traveled to Birmingham
    beginning at 3:15 p.m. April 15. The pack stopped and ate in Gardendale before arriving at the zoo.
    The Zoo Snooze began at 7 p.m. Three Tiger Cubs were among the scouts who played a game while they waited for the Snooze to begin.
    Once inside, the scouts wasted little time finding a suspension bridge in the playground area.
    Scouts set up their sleeping quarters under a pavilion. Some set up camp near an aquarium. The lights burned all night.
    The group listened and learned in a classroom discussion. One of the zoo volunteers Stephanie was a snake charmer. The scouts
    got to pet a snake, weasel and alligator. The staff volunteers showed off several other animals including a couple of owls.
    Following the classroom discussion, the scouts and parents enjoyed a 20-minute ride on the zoo's carousel. At about 8:30 p.m., an hour-long flashlight tour was conducted by the four zoo workers. Along the way, the scouts saw alligators, zebras, giraffes, camels and even went inside a trailer used to haul a rhino across the country. After the tour, the scouts enjoyed a snack, making crafts and coloring images from the zoo. As 11 p.m. approached, some scouts grew tired. It was time to sleep.
    At 6 a.m. breakfast was served and there was time to hit the playground. one last time before journeying home with memories, patches and smiles.

    *Congratulations are in order for Gus Malcom, Jonah Armstrong and Steele Williams.
    The trio represented Pack 222 at the Pinewood Derby District competition March 12 in Decatur.
    Gus's speedster finished sixth overall among the 50 cars at district.
    In the pack competition Feb. 26, Gus had the fastest car while Jonah and Steele finished second and third overall, respectively. All racers took home trophies.
    Food and Pepsi was plentiful for the nearly 100 guests at the racing competition.

    *Letter from Iraq: SFC Garvin M. Ficklin of the 1st Cavalry "Roughriders" received the pack's care package
    sent before Christmas to a soldier in Iraq. He sent Pack 222 a nice letter dated Feb. 3, 2005.

    *The Pack 222 Christmas Party on Dec. 20 was a big
    success. More than 60 people attended the party at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Pizza was served and games were played.
    The highlight of the party was when the scouts were awarded their badges for completing their projects throughout the year thus far.

    *Pack 222 had a full trailer in the Moulton Christmas parade
    on Friday, Dec. 3. Scouts and parents rode and waved along the route.
    Plenty of sweet treats rained from the Pack 222 entry in the parade.

    *Eleven scouts and their families survived a spooky, but fun-filled weekend
    at Cub Haunted at Camp Comer in Mentone, Al. on Oct. 16-17.
    *About 20 scouts and their families enjoyed a campout at the Oakville
    Indian Mounds on Sept. 24 and 25. After building their tents, the campers
    canoed, built a fire, cooked, sang songs, did skits and told stories.
    In the early morning, adults served doughnuts, sausage biscuits and
    pancakes. A fishing tourney followed with Steele Williams catching
    the biggest fish being 18.5 inches long.
    Marbles and badminton kept the scouts busy before photos
    and door prizes were handed out. Some photos of the
    campout have been posted. A special thanks
    to Burger King and Wal-mart for their support for some of the food and door prizes.
